After you install it
Chrome and Edge tuck new extensions away behind the puzzle-piece icon in the toolbar. Click it and pin PitchShed, so it is one click away. Then open a page that plays a video or audio, start it, and click the PitchShed icon in that tab. The popup shows the page title, the Key, Speed and Loop rows, and — during the first 7 days — how many days of the free Pro trial are left.
PitchShed works in the tab you clicked in, and keeps working there, also when you move on to the next video on the same page. Another tab needs its own click. That click is also what keeps the permissions small: the extension cannot touch a page you have not clicked it on.
What it asks your browser for
| Permission | What it is for |
|---|---|
activeTab | Access to the one tab you click the icon in — nothing else, and nothing before the click. |
scripting | Starting PitchShed's own code in that tab. It loads nothing from the internet. |
storage | Keeping your settings per song, the day you installed, and your license, on your device. |
It has no permission to read the sites you visit, so the browser shows no warning about site access when you install it.
What you may see in the popup
PitchShed tells you plainly when it cannot do something. These are its own words:
- “No video or audio found on this page. Start playing something and open PitchShed again.” — there is no media element on the page yet.
- “PitchShed can't run on this page.” — browser pages and the extension stores do not allow extensions to run.
- “This audio is protected, so the key can't change here.” — DRM-protected audio, for example on Spotify or Netflix.
- “Key change isn't available on this site. Speed and loop still work.” — the site stops the audio engine from starting.
- “The sound got blocked by this site. Reload the page to get it back.” — the site muted the processed sound; reloading restores it, and the key is not saved.
- “Click play on the video once, then change the key.” — the browser starts audio only after you have interacted with the page.
- “Loop isn't available on live streams.” — a live stream has no end to loop back from.
Good to know before you install
- Desktop Chrome 116 or newer, and Microsoft Edge. Not phones or tablets.
- Videos inside embedded players on other pages are not supported in this version.
- Changing the key adds a delay of about a tenth of a second to the sound; at key 0 nothing is added.
- Speed is free for good; the rest is free for 7 days, then $4.99 / month or $29.99 / year. See pricing.
